Bikes Galore at the Rad Bazaar This Week

We launched our Rad Bazaar in 2023 as a private selling platform for The Radavist Membership subscribers, offering zero commission on sales. Wanting it to be the best user experience possible, we built this platform from the ground up, opting not to use the buggy plugins commonly available. Over the past year, we’ve been working on the Rad Bazaar 2.0, and when it launched last spring, we received an influx of unique bikes, rare components, and other items our readership is fond of, resulting in 1500 listings and growing.

This week, a flood of really cool bikes has landed, so let’s check them out!

Outside is Magic Interviews John

Outside is Magic, a new podcast from Broken and Coastal founder Christopher San Agustin interviewed John recently.

In this episode, we talk about what it means to build something on your own terms, the highs and lows of creative work, and how bikes became a medium for so much more than riding. We get into the early days of blogging, navigating burnout, the impact of community, and how John has managed to keep The Radavist weird, personal, and honest, even as the industry changes around him.

Whether you’re a cyclist or not, this episode is about staying true to your voice, creating space for others, and learning to move a little slower.

Special thanks to Christopher for the time and effort here. Much respect!

Camera Corner the Book is On Schedule!

Camera Corner the Book is On Schedule!

Cari and Christina met in Fairfax with Wende Cragg to finish wrapping up the Camera Corner book earlier this month. We have some good news! The book is still on its original schedule, so we are still planning on shipping it out in November. The book is really coming together, with approximately 200 pages of stunning photography and words by mountain biking’s poet laureate, Wende Cragg.

Together, Cari Carmean and Christina Speed have a collective decades-plus worth of experience in graphic design, art direction, and photo editing, and they once worked together in the outdoor industry a handful of moons ago. Christina now works as a full-time freelance book designer and designs all the books for Patagonia and other clients. Their collective vision for this book is to finally bring Wende’s beautiful work – her images and words – to light in print form.

Stay tuned for more updates as events warrant. And yes, you can still pre-order the book. This will help us offset the costs of producing it.

Thanks for your patience! We want this book to be perfect and getting it right takes time. :-)

Bike Camp Chattanooga Recap Video!

Pinch Yourself, You’re At Bike Camp.

This April, Two Bikes Chattanooga rang in their first birthday with a two day “celebration of the non-competitive side of cycling” featuring bikes and camping. They’re calling it “Bike Camp”.

Bike Camp is a festival hosted by another source of magic, Two Bikes Chattanooga. Two Bikes is a nonprofit community bike shop that, among other things, diverts bikes and bike parts from the waste stream, builds rad bikes, donates a bike to someone in need for every bike they sell, and provides a community bike stand (and encouragement) free of charge. Mitchell Connell founded this second version of Two Bikes in Chattanooga last April (it’s a separate nonprofit from the original Knoxville entity, for the sake of the resilience and agility of both), and has been building community around it at a meteoric pace for a year now.

Big thanks to Mitchell, Derek, and the broader team of staff, workshop hosts, vendors, and volunteers who made Bike Camp exist. Thanks to Lael for always bringing such friendliness & positivity wherever she goes. And, of course: thanks to everyone who came to Bike Camp.

We’ve Restocked Our Cactivist Socks

We’ve Restocked Our Cactivist Socks

While we’re working on our Radavist spring merch drop, we re-upped our best-selling Cactivist socks.

New Mexico is home to a plethora of succulents and cacti. Two of our favorites are the New Mexico Agave Century Plant (Agavaceae neomexicana) and Ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens). If you’ve ever seen either one bloom, you know why we get so freaking excited about them. Each pair comes with (1) ocotillo and (1) agave illustration. And there’s a roadrunner (NM state bird) on the sole for good luck :)

Specs:

• 7″ cuff length
• Recover merino wool 60/40 blend, processed in Spain and/or North Carolina and knit in the USA
• These are slightly thicker in the best way than our previous summer weight socks
• Unisex fit: MD fits W7-10 and M6-9; LG fits W10-13 and M9-12.5

These are back in stock and shipping from Santa Fe from The Radavist Webshop.

The 2024 Radavist Product Awards

Reportage

The 2024 Radavist Product Awards

To wrap up our Year in Review posts, here are the picks for the 2024 Radavist Product Awards.

Radical Atavism is all about telling stories, and we love to tell stories about the people who bring unique color and character to the world of cycling. Reportage is where our passion lies – but sometimes along the way, we get to try out and test a lot of innovative bikes and bike-related products. We pour our creative energy into our reviews and over the years, we’ve established a reputation for publishing thoughtful and well-researched opinions on products.

This year, we found flaws, offered our unvarnished takes, and fell in love with a lot of products, all while deciphering the world of bikes we know and love. Some of these products deserve some extra recognition as we bid adieu to 2024.

Let’s check out ten cool things that made it to The 2024 Radavist Product Awards, marked by our Mauve Sandstone Toad below!
