SRAM Eagle 90 Transmission Long-Term Luddite Review

SRAM broke its fast-paced march to wholly electronic shifting in its high-end product catalog earlier this spring with Eagle 90 Transmission, a rebuildable and fully cable-actuated drivetrain “ecosystem.” John’s been relentlessly testing it all year, both on a Kona Hei Hei and his Meriwether Storm Camo hardtail, and has some thoughts. As an increasingly woeful tech luddite, this might be the most honest (and rambly) review of the drivetrain you’ll read on the internet…

Reportage

John’s Meriwether Storm Camo Titanium 150 mm Hardtail

After moving to the Southern Rockies in early 2020, John’s appetite for titanium hardtails has increased. There’s just something about a flexy, compliant frame and a beefy fork that makes all-day exploits in his backyard trails all the more engaging and fun. Taking five years of knowledge from various Ti hardtail reviews, he pinged Whit Johnson of Meriwether Cycles to make him a dream hardtail frame. Let’s check it out!

White Industries Quietly Rolled Out 9-12 Speed 2X VBC Chainrings

White Industries just quietly rolled out its all-new updated VBC (Variable Bolt Circle) 2 x 12-speed chainrings. These made in Petaluma, California rings are compatible with Shimano and SRAM 9-12 speed 2x drivetrains and White Industries cranks. The brand has been working on this development for year and the newly-updated rings includes compatibility with Shimano 9-12 speed 105/Ultegra/GRX/Dura Ace and 10-12 speed SRAM Apex/Rival/Red, in either mechanical or electronic versions.

They retain the Variable Bolt Circle feature that allows up to five different size inner rings to be mounted on the same outer ring, with 33 possible gear combinations across the range. And as we always strive for when designing new products, they are backwards compatible with all White Industries MR30 series cranks and White Industries direct mount square taper cranks (due later this summer).

V2 VBC 2x inner rings, outer rings, and hardware are completely redesigned and feature revised outer chainring tooth and shift ramp geometry, five shift pins, a replaceable chain catch pin, and recessed inner chainring bolts. And now you can get them in black and silver, not to mention seven different colors of chainring nuts so you can really tie the room together.
