We’re always stoked when makers share their custom projects for a Readers’ Rides, and today, we’re featuring the work of Gunnison-based Goodday Bikes + Curiosity Bags. Read on for Chris and Arly’s words and photos of this stunning Javelina hardtail!
The ‘Javelina’ is a one-off custom Goodday built for the demanding conditions of the Grand Loop Bikepacking Race.
I found inspiration for the bike’s name after a fierce encounter I had with a squadron of Javelinas while bikepacking the Coconino Loop in Arizona. The bike’s color scheme is designed to reflect sunlight when the mercury soars above 110° and glow in the dark for when riders become nocturnal to battle the heat.
As for the Javelina’s geometry, it’s perhaps best described as “down-country long and low.” With a mid-travel – 120 mm – fork, a 65° degree head tube angle, 490 mm reach, 76° seat tube angle, 430 mm chainstay length and a 70 mm bottom bracket drop.
With a geometry like that, it complements the 5DEV 160 mm cranks and 29″ wheels — which, by the way, have matching custom glow-in-the-dark splatter powder coat! Velocity Blunt 35 is laced to purple Chris King MTN hubs and those bright white limited edition white Onza 2.4″ tires.
Other purple anodized things include the LH4 Lewis brakes (which Goodday carries in stock!), Chris King headset and 5DEV chain ring.
We made the front rack by modifying the Goodday Spacer Cradle with bosses for a bolt-in minimalist bag. This then holds a space blanket and foam pad, for napping during the race. The bike is complete with Curiosity Bike Bags, featuring appliqué artwork of Javelinas and their favorite food: prickly pears!
